True to its name, the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art explores the impact and influence of Spanish styles and forms in the New World, as well as the influences of pieces from countries as distant as China. Many of the pieces displayed are from or reflective of art forms popular in the 16th and 17th centuries, brought to the New Mexico region, with locally produced items and adapted to incorporate local elements as well. Items displayed include carvings and paintings of religious figures known as santos, intricate straw applique pieces, works made with precious metals, painted pottery pieces and more. Part of the Museum Hill area of Santa Fe, other nearby museums include the Museum of International Folk Art, the Museum of Indian Arts & Cultures and the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian.
