Spread over 200 acres of the arid desert outside Santa Fe, El Rancho de las Golodrinas, translated as "The Ranch of the Swallows," is a living history museum with structures dating back to its initial creation in the 1700s. Buildings connected by gently sloping paths take guests from one restored building to another, each portraying a different aspect of 18th and 19th century ranch life, from educational methods in a schoolhouse to basic cooking methods to farming processes and blacksmithing. Costumed interpreters demonstrate various crafts, and guests are invited to participate in traditional activities during special festivals and events. The site is about 18 miles by car southwest of downtown Santa Fe, past the Santa Fe Municipal Airport.
